A Firm Foundation – Resources

These are a few resources that have inspired me over the years.  It’s the topics that matter not the personalities I’ve chosen in the videos or writing, and that we let God search our hearts on each one. Sometimes we can’t see what we can’t see so we need some help to hear from a neutral source.

Fear of the Lord – The beginning of wisdom

Pride and Humility

Pride is often so hard to detect in ourselves. It is actually a protection mechanism rooted in fear that so many of us use to mask what’s really going on inside. It’s likely the hardest sin to see because when we are affected by it we become unteachable and can’t “hear” anything contrary to our own experience or opinion. Thus, it stops conversations even before they can really start. It aims to keep all things shallow and meaningless because conversations are hard to have. Pride happens when we forget to think about how others feel and only protect what we feel, so we become twisted and blind to what’s happening in our corporate culture, whether family, business or organization of any kind. It happens between friends and family. It’s a killer of relationships and a killer of fun and connection.  We can forget how God feels as well.

Scripture says that God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. Why? Because no one can work with the proud. Pride is not a good team player and causes us to forget our place and to be grateful for what opportunities we have to love and serve well.  It gets jealous when other people flourish because its self-centered nature can cause one to thing they should still be doing everything to hold it all together, when that’s God’s job… holding it all together.  Pride is a mocker. Pride steals glory from God. It stands between man and God and subtly, and loudly at times,  takes attention away from the one who we all should see and honor and glorify. God. Our creator and his creation. All of creation should point to the glory of God, not to a man, not to an organization, not to an experience. It all should point to God. Each one of us is made to reflect the glory of GOD.

Pride – A Poem

by Beth Moore

My name is Pride. I am a cheater.
I cheat you of your God-given destiny…
because you demand your own way.
I cheat you of contentment…
because you “deserve better than this.”
I cheat you of knowledge…
because you already know it all.
I cheat you of healing…
because you are too full of you to forgive.
I cheat you of holiness…
because you refuse to admit when you are wrong.
I cheat you of vision…
because you’d rather look in the mirror than out a window.
I cheat you of genuine friendship…
because nobody’s going to know the real you.
I cheat you of love…
because real romance demands sacrifice.
I cheat you of greatness in heaven…
because you refuse to wash another’s feet on earth.
I cheat you of God’s glory…
because I convinced you to seek your own.
My name is Pride. I am a cheater.
You like me because you think I’m always looking out for you.
I’m looking to make a fool of you.
God has so much for you, I admit, but don’t worry…
If you stick with me you’ll never know.

This one has bitten us all! or rather WE bite when we take it on! Offense alienates us from true friendship and connection.
